The RDS is a philanthropic society supported by commercial activities and therefore had a diverse range of systems in place. The existing IT infrastructure required updating which necessitated either further investment in hardware or the implementation of a private cloud and virtual desktop solution.
Trilogy Technologies won the contract to implement a virtualized solution which included a fully redundant virtual private cloud infrastructure based on VMware vSphere 5.1 technology along with provision of managed services for the new infrastructure.
The core infrastructure upgrade included an upgrade of the Active Directory & MS Exchange environments as well as an overhaul of the existing Network Infrastructure along with a Veeam solution for backup and business continuity. Concerns around an ageing desktop fleet were addressed by implementing a virtual desktop environment on the VMWare View platform. The benefits accruing from a virtual desktop environment include, simplified management, enhanced security and recoverability and the RDS also implemented Windows 7 as the standardised operating system for the organisation.
The solution enabled the RDS to upgrade and standardise its server and storage platform along with the implementation of a new desktop environment. These enhancements will allow the organisation to plan maintenance and upgrades with minimal impact on business productivity.
Following the introduction of VMWare, the RDS has begun upgrading their various business systems which has increased efficiency. They are now confident that their ICT infrastructure is stable and capable of catering for these improvements. The RDS can now recover files quickly and easily at critical moments and have used Veeam and existing server hardware to implement a Disaster Recovery solution to ensure business continuity.
